Mediterranean Whale Fin

There is something magical about a whale, I have wanted to see one so much that I started making them for shelves, plants, walls, cups - I even had a whale tail on my first make when I was on The Great Pottery Throw Down.

When I was in a wheelchair I would feel the most free when I was in the water and ever since then I have found whales fascinating.

I hand build these whale fins so that each one has its own character with its own feeling and glaze. I really try to give each one a uniqueness just like the whales that inspire them. I stoneware glaze these to make the ocean inspired glaze liquid looking and almost dripping. Who knows when you look away you might hear a splash.

I love to have these on the shelf or in houseplants to make me think that there is a whale just popping out of sight and keeping me company.

Interestingly I have found out since making these that in many cultures, a whale tail symbolises good luck, speed, strength, and freedom. Which makes me love them even more.

This whale fin is roughly 16cm tall from bottom to tip.
